A message from Rabbi Newburge - Shabbat Flames
As we gather this Shabbat, each in our own communities, we are united by the grief and anguish we feel over the destruction of homes and lives by fire this week in Southern California.
In the Talmud our rabbis write, “Although fire comes down from Heaven, it is a commandment also for man to bring fire.” The commandment regards a sacred flame, like the flame of our Shabbat candles (and not the destructive fire of the arsonist).
On behalf of those suffering in California please light the sacred Shabbat candles, one for each member of your household (two candles are required, more are permitted), and please consider donating at least $1 for each candle lit.
The money collected will be used to purchase gift cards (grocery stores, Target, Walgreens, etc) for those who have lost their homes. Please direct your donations to the Temple office.
We wish you and yours a safe and peaceful Shabbat Shalom.
